So for the new year i plan to do a lot more traveling then i have in the past, but usually when i'm on the road i have a problem finding good places to eat, and usually settle on fast food. so my question to you is, what are places to eat in your city/town that you'd recommend others check out. i do plan some international travel, so please post as well euros. i will start
if you're in san fran and looking for a great burger, there are 2 great places i can name off hand
holy grille, on townsend street in SOMA
and custom burger on 7th and mission st
both are great, friendly places with damn good food aside from just burgers. custom burger has an adjoined bar so you can get food and get a good drink at the same time.

Best place I had food at while I was in San Fran was one of the Naan n' Curries peppered around the city. So cheap and so good. Chicken tikka masala FTW.
As for food here in Raleigh I'll have to get back to you on that...

Ok, you've mentioned chicken tikka masala... I don't even know of a restaurant in Costa Rica that makes it. I'm going to go have a good, long cry now.

Downtown Dallas has some really world class amazing spots. Fuse - a fusion of tex mex and east asian, 5 star place. Stephen Pyles restaurant, he's world reknown and it's also a 5 star joint.
A bit more down to earth, we've got two fantastic mexican places in our little 2000 person town just outside the metroplex. Miguelito's and Sinola. Dirt cheap, great food, very fast.

The problem for me is narrowing it down, but I'll try:
Sushi - Sasabune (their motto: "No California Roll and No Spicy Tuna - Trust Us") in West LA, Hokusai in Beverly Hills
Steakhouse - Mastro's in Beverly Hills
Ramen - Santouka in Torrance or West LA (inside Mitsuwa Marketplaces), or Shinsengumi for Hakata style (Artesia or Gardena)
Mexican - La Cabana in Venice
Korean BBQ - Family Restaurant in ... wait for it ... Koreatown, more specifically 8th and Berendo ($15 all you can eat meat and side dishes, seriously)
Spanish Tapas - Tasca in Midtown on 3rd
Spanish Paella - La Paella in Beverly Hills
Open til 3am Diner - Swingers in Rancho Park on Beverly
Hollywood Diner - 25 Degrees "Burgers and Wine" on bottom floor of the Roosevelt Hotel (they serve up a mean ketel tonic)
Overhyped Hot Dogs - Pink's on La Brea
Best Underrated Hot Dogs - Any (what I call) "dangerdog" cart which can be found outside any club establishment after 11pm. They are tossed with onions and have many available toppings ... and are always wrapped in bacon. YUM.
Homestyle Brazilian - Cafe Brazil in Palms on Venice Blvd.
Brazilian BBQ - Fogo de Chao on La Cienega
Southern Comfort Food - Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles in Hollywood or Pico Rivera, Aunt Kizzy's Back Porch in Marina del Rey
Breakfast/Brunch - Toast in Midtown on 3rd, Mani's on Fairfax, M Cafe on Fairfax, King's Road Cafe on Beverly Blvd
Tequila Bar/Mexican - El Carmen also in Midtown on 3rd
Fondue - The Melting Pot in Pasadena, other locations
Italian - Il Piccolino on Robertson or Angelini Osteria on Beverly

New York's easy. Good food all over the place.
In Minneapolis, MN, it helps to be a little more selective. Here's a handful of my favorites...
The Midtown Global Market,
where you'll now find a killah combination of cheap+tasty, including Manny's Tortas, Holy Land and La Loma, the home of tasty tamales.
920 E Lake St
Minneapolis

One-stop picnic shop: The Wedge Co-Op,
where you can get a loaf of bread, a fresh-pressed fruit juice, an array of treats and be on your way to the Sculpture Garden for lunch.
2105 Lyndale Avenue South
Minneapolis MN, 55405
612-871-3993
The improbable Sea Salt Eatery
for fish sandwiches and crab cakes that have no right to be so tasty. Be warned: They're only open in the good months.
4825 Minnehaha Ave
Minneapolis
612.721.8990
Ted Cook's 19th Hole Barbeque
Classic baked beans, cornbread, greens and saucy barbecue. Worth getting lost on the residential streets trying to find it? Hell yeah.
2814 E 38th St
Minneapolis
612.721.2023
Victor's 1959 Cafe
Eggs with black beans and fried yuca? Toast with guava jelly? Yeah, I'm in.
3756 Grand Ave S

Hell's Kitchen,
which makes awesome bison sausage and their signature brunchy treat: the luxe Mahnomin Porridge.
89 South 10th St
Minneapolis

Emily's Lebanese Deli
I've been trying for close to 6 years to make tabbouleh that tasty...

Minneapolis

Blue Nile
I'm a sucker for Ethiopian. Mmm... Stew.
2027 E Franklin Ave

Surdyk's
wine + cheese shop par excellence
303 East Hennepin Ave

A Baker's Wife's Pastry Shop
Unassuming, inexpensive, impressive. Get a tart.
4200 28th Ave S

Coffee Gallery at Open Book.
There aren't many things I crave more than Books + Coffee. Open Book is an amazing resource for anyone who loves books and enjoys seeing how they're constructed.

Bayport Cookery
Okay, so it's actually a stone's throw from MSP. But my lord, people... they host a morel fest. It's damn tasty and not terribly expensive. Make the trip. These guys were doing sustainable, local cuisine before it was cool.

Meanwhile, I've got a list going on my site of favorite spots

For Victoria (there's no way I can narrow it down to one place):
Green Tea Cafe
Tiny little place that you'd probably never even notice if you walked by, but the most AMAZING sushi (and other Japanese food) I've ever tasted. It's run by a Japanese couple (as far as I can tell, there are no other staff), the prices are amazingly low (a complete dinner for two people comes to $25.00 - try to beat that!), and everything on the menu is absolutely to die for. Try the Unagi (eel) sushi, some Houjicha tea, and a green tea roll for dessert.
Pagliacci's
Small, crowded, and quirky - the lineup to get a table goes down the street almost every night. Their pastas are SO good, and pretty much nowhere makes better bread than they do.
Il Terrazzo
More Italian food, but more classy and upscale. The olive tapenade that they serve with the bread is excellent, and the penne with chicken, cashews, and mango is a must-have.
The Noodle Box
Southeast Asian noodle bar - my favourites are the chili plum noodles and the vietnamese spring rolls.
Paprika's
Everything on their menu is made from fresh local organic ingredients - and you can taste the difference.
The Black Stilt
Okay, technically this one's a coffee house and not a restaurant, but there's only one word to sum this place up: Fantastic.
