I am always curious about people in a LDR, especially if you have never met that person in real life before.

What do you do, and do you think that it can survive, as long as there's a plan to meet eventually? Or do you find it a total joke that it's impossible for two to fall in love without meeting each other technically in real life, even with the advanced technologies of webcam, skype, IM and other technological devices?

Just throwing it out ^_^

It's...well, one way or another, they have to see each other. Very few relationships work exclusively via written communication. It's the physical intimacy that you have to trust and take further.

Despite what we might say about the mind and spirit, we're still biological and that needs something we can touch and feel.

I think that if you never meet, how can you know if the chemistry is there until too late?

I actually have firsthand experience in this. I was an online gamer for a long time before other things in life became more important and time consuming. I met her while playing, and we talked for about a year on the phone and while playing the game. Eventually, we took the trip to meet in person and everything worked out fine. We are moving in together in two months! In order for something like this to work, you need to fall in love with their personality since physical attraction is not going to be cause enough for you to wait. It takes a great deal of patience, discipline, and desire to keep a relationship like this alive. Fortunately, if you are both on the same page, the payoff is a relationship that is unlike anyother. I know my girlfriend on a much deeper level than I believe most other couples experience, due to the constant conversations and lack of other ways to spend time together. It does help to have something you both like to do online, like games, just as an escape from the constant forced conversations that the phone imposes upon you. Also, we used webcams often, just as another change.

Overall, the hardest part of a long distance relationship is after you really do meet her (or him) and realize that they are everything that you have been dreaming of, you have to leave and wait for the next time you can both find the time or money to be together.
