So, I've been thinking about getting a pet, but I'm not sure what I want.
I don't want anything boring like a dog or a cat, I want something interesting and not so common. I'm not too concerned with the initial cost, but I'd prefer if keeping it alive didn't cost an arm and a leg. It also needs to be fairly low maintenance since I spend a good portion of the day out of the house - which also means it needs to be able to fend for itself and not need constant attention while it's young. And it needs to be small enough to be comfortable in a room about 12 foot square - it wouldn't spend its whole life there, but it would at least during the day while I'm at work. Bonus points if it's something a cat wouldn't want to maim, because then it could have the run of the house.
I'd like it to be something I can really have fun with. I won't say "play" because pets aren't toys, but you know what I mean - I don't want something that will just lie around its cage all day staring into space. I want something with personality.
Thing is, I don't know many people around here, and I don't really enjoy the company of most of those I do know. And the remaining few are either boring, lazy or unemployed. So I don't really have much of a social life, and I feel like I want some interaction with something that isn't human.
So any ideas? I'm leaning towards a budgie or rats at the moment I think. My grandmother had a pair of them and they'd sing to each other, and I used to love watching them. The only downside is their lifespan is pretty short. Another I've considered is a pair of rats (rats like company) - my Dad had a pair of them and they were brilliant - the most surprising thing was that they didn't chew through every wire in the house.
What do you reckon?

Ferrets are cool, you have to get then un-stunk though but they're really fun to play with.
And how could you not want a dog? :)

A hamster. Seriously: for kids, totally common; for adults, not so. Think about it: how many adults do you know that have hamsters?

And the answer is...
A chinchilla.
Seriously.

I second the 'how can you not want a dog' lol. However, I get that a dog is a lot of work. Other option that isn't so low maintenance as in requires heating and so on is a iguana or lizard of some form. Fruit lizards are really good for pets and there is a wide variety of reptiles you could go for. Snakes would work too but they are relatively high maintenance with regards to care.

Scrivs, I had two Chinchillas back when I was about 17.
It wasn't the best pet experience I've ever had, to be honest. One of them got attacked by my sister's hamsters (or guinea pigs, or something; they all look the same) and lost an eye, then died soon after. The other one did manage a good few years, but it was one tempremental bastard. It would run around its cage all night making a hell of a racket, and wouldn't go anywhere near people. Not to mention crapping everywhere, chewing wires and spraying sand everywhere every time it had a bath.
I loved them, but I don't want to go through that again.
The idea of ferrets or hamsters doesn't really appeal to me at all.

I'm not a mammal man anyways. I always loved the idea of a huge aquarium with exotic fish, but the idea of cleaning that joker out never appeals to me. Low maintenance and something you can enjoy...sounds like a snake to me. Also cool to watch them eat.

I wanted a snake for a long time when I was younger actually, Tam. I could think about that I suppose, but all the equipment you need is so expensive. I'm not sure I'd want to spend that much.

Haha man you don't need a pet. You need a Nintendo DS or something.

I was going to say snake - my brother had one (Sophy, and yes, that's how he spelt it). She was very affectionate, had a great personality, and was content to remain in her cage throughout the day. But she did have a tendency to grow. When we got her she was happy in a 2ft long fish tank. By the time she died, her tank was nearer 12ft long... Other than the initial set-up costs however, she wasn't expensive to keep.
Other pet suggestions. Hmmm. Rats? Ferrets? They do have great personalities. I never was a fan of hamsters or guinea pigs for some reason.
Parrots are cool too.

I had a parrot once too. Noisy thing that was.
I'm liking the idea of a lizard. I don't have room for a 12 foot tank though, haha. An iguana would be badass though. Maybe I'll check that out.

Ok, I know my new kitten sparked this post! (And even if it didn't, I'm going to pretend it did because he's cute enough to have done so.)
Anyway, I nominate a kitten. Tiny, cute and independent enough to be left alone in your room while you're at work. Also, a perfect candidate for cheap fun time; all you'll need is a piece of string and a spare few minutes. Plus, I promise, one of the most amazing things in the world is waking up to a tiny 10-ounce kitten purring up a storm as he cuddle up to you. Bliss, I tell you!

Scivs they are great and I plan to get one when sorted out moving. Awful site link here but have you thought of the easiest lizard to keep which is a leopard gecko.

Iguana....or I second the chinchilla however they do smell sort of funny. I think hamsters and gerbils, rats, whatever are a waste of money and they dont live long. Dogs are a great pet (obviously) but a lot of work...Personally a cat is a great option for a low maintenance pet but you said that was too boooorrring....but when you wake up in the morning and there's this little furry head butting you in the face, its awfully sweet....***ahhhh***

Like Scrives started saying, just get a Nintendo DS with a copy of Nintendogs. Or, if that's still to expensive, I hear Tamagotchis are fun. :-P

How about a chia-pet!!? :) Easy to care for.
Ferrets might be fun, but they are extremely messy to clean up after. *Gagging*

No offense to cat-lovers, but I think they are very boring pets.

Millions of cats and dogs are killed each year due to overpopulation.
You want either a cat or a dog, and you will hopefully donate to a spay & neuter program that targets feral colonies, or donate time to an animal rescue group.

A rabbit. I know, it's very manly. However, it may get you an "aww" from the ladies, which can't be too bad of a thing, right?
My best friend has had pet rabbits her whole life, and a relative of mine raised them for that. I'm personally a dog lover, but I think a rabbit might be good if you're looking for something inexpensive, easy to care for, etc. My friend's rabbits are even litter box trained, a thing I wasn't aware could happen.
According to wiki, they can live between four and twenty years. I think their lifespan depends entirely on their own personal health, as well as the way you care for them. My friend's bunny, Kimu, is thirteen years old now.

I want a cat. My family is especially
one day I shall have a cat and she shall sleep on my bed and I shall name her Macbook
against cats, so I'm stuck bathing the dog every three days, or whenever she decides to roll in muck.
Go get a cat, Rich. Be normal for once and live my dreams out for me.
