I know some of us go by our real names online (or a derivation/nickname thereof), but I'm interested in knowing the reason behind your aliases.
I go by gringuitica, which is a fictional word. I'm a gringa living in Costa Rica. Costa Ricans are called ticos because of the linguistic quirk whereby they form the diminutive (minutico instead of minutito). Gringuitica is a false diminutive (it's just gringuita), but usually draws a grin from the ticos. It works for me: gringa by blood, but tica in heart. And that's my story. Now let's hear yours.

I said to someone on IRC once: "I need an alias." After throwing a few ideas around, someone said, for no real reason, "nostrich"
I asked why and they replied "Why not?" and nostrich was born.

dook= dooky-y.
dooky = the nickname my older brother gave me (and still uses) when I was a baby, cause he was the one who always ended up changing my diapers.

I got ensnared in the WotC forums for M:tG and D&D and I needed a character name. "Tocasia" was an archaeologist character in M:tG, I was studying archaeology... It seemed like serendipity. Pretty soon people were shortening Tocasia to either Toc or Cas, and I was going to be damned if I was going to sound like half a clock, so I became Cas and have been Cas for the past seven years.

fray is short for frayedknot
I was using frayedknot for a while but then I was trying to have something simpler and shortened it to fray.
Frayedknot comes from the punchline to my favorite joke... "3 ropes go into a bar..." "Nope, I'm a frayed knot."
Kamigoroshi

I actually have an explanation about my nick on my about page, but I'll explain it here anyway.
Kamigoroshi literally means "God Killer" and is a derivative from a Japanese anime called Eden's Bowy which is a story about how there is a chosen one every generation sent out to protect humanity from Gods that interfere with the fate of human beings.
I took up the name 7 years ago because I was tired of people saying that all our fates are determined and there is nothing I can do. I trust in the idea of freedom of wills and because of that I tend to encourage people to believe that their life is determined by their own two hands and no one else's, not even God.
The name took because no one really knew what it meant and people started to call me Kami after that.

I go by "nowickedwitch" as that was my original AIM name.
I even have a domain nowickedwitch.com which back in high school pointed to, of all things, a "dead journal". I just became nowickedwitch.
I was sooooo cool in 9th grade, and there was this company called "no wicked witch records" based in Oregon or Washington or something like that. I would buy vinyl "garage band" music from them because like I said I was soooo cool.
The company is deceased but nowickedwitch lives on.
Some people also choose to call me "Alice" as when I first started my blog someone called me alice and so I figured "ok I'm Alice", what the hell.
When I started calling myself cooper, which is what my RL friends call me, people thought it had to do with me being Alice ...... some who read my blog still do not know that cooper is actually, at least in some way, my real name.

I use shadeofgray because when I was doing magic I had a website called Shade of Gray Illusions.

I like Karsh. Seriously, I picked it because it suits me. I did want to stray away from the family name, and I think this works perfectly.

Liquid06 was taken from a concept I used in an interactive art project I called Liquid Change.
The idea behind my project was to use images and text in a web environment to show that people (and therefore their art) are in a constant state of change. It was kind of a silly project, but it stuck with me - I still use it as my domain name.
I added the 06 partially to shorten it and partially to make it more unique. That way I could have the same handle everywhere without having it be unavailable. I started using liquid06 when I first got an Xbox Live gamertag.

I chose "Roro" because it's the first part of my Star Trek name and I find Star Trek names (or Star Wars, depending on where you heard it first) hilarious.
You take the first two letters of your first name (in my case "Rosemary") and the first two letters of your last name ("Rowe") and that's your first name. Then you take the first three letters of your mother's maiden name and the first three letters of the city where you were born.
My full Star Trek name is Roro Kimtor - the Klingon who works in shipping. Jealous?

I don't know Cas - "Clke Buctau" would be like the sexy psychic scientist on board, whose Welsh mother and German father imbued her with a strong work ethic and lack of vowels. Don't dismiss it out of hand, is all I'm saying. :-)

Um, my name is Tony.
In hinesight, it probably wasn't too smart as someone took "my" name on ScrivsTyme so I had to register another name for the forums. If I ever see you in the street OTHER Tony, there will be hell to pay!

Roro- I actually tried your formula and came up with Chruepstro! I really picked my name because it's the name of my dog. He's very elderly and mostly sleeps and barks.

Oh and my screen name is well, my name....almost too boring to be real.
Sara
Written Mar. 18, 2007 / Report /
I generally just go by my first name, because I've never really been able to think of a good nickname/alias, and also because I'm boring like that.
Around some sites I go by smileysara though (usually just if Sara is already taken), since I smile a lot and I thought it would be pretty self-explanitory to just tack that onto the beginning of my name.
