Are you being what you want to be when you grow up?

I have yet to meet anyone who says they're doing what they always wanted to do. (Actually, I hear doctors say it, but I think they're full of shit - kids don't want to be docs, they want to be ninja. Kids' parents want them to be docs.)
I do meet people that say they've found the perfect career, though. But even that is rare. Given the choice, adults stick with what they know vs what they enjoy. (Kids will choose the opposite.)
How about you? Are you doing what you want to do?
(My theory is that a much larger percentage of web developers / designers / geeks answer yes -- second only to astronauts who could probably convince me they're also doing what they always wanted to do.)

I'm working on becoming what I've always wanted to be, but I'm not there just yet.

I wrote about this once. I've always wanted to change the world as a kid, it didn't matter how, what mattered for me was that I did. So given that, I don't think I've deviated from that in my life.
Now I'm completing my second degree in medical science pathology (the first being applied medical biotechnology).
Though in retrospect, I'm still a kid with a magnifying glass and the whole world full of peop...err...ants to fry. :)

I thought I wanted to be a scientist at one point. And an artist. I have undergrad degrees in bio (genetics) and art (oil) and a grad degree in architecture. Took me a long time (and lotsa loans) to realize I actually didn't want to do any those things. I'm still on the fence about the ninja career though.

I'm in the field I always wanted to be in. Does that count? I'm not in the specific job that I wanted (bad ass fighter ace would be my childhood dream) but I'm in a job that I love.
I'm lucky and boy-oh-boy do I know it. And, I get to move to beautiful Colo. Springs in a few months. This job really couldn't be much better!

This might sound corny, but my parents always told us three girls that "we will contribute to the world" and we are. One sister is a full time parent, one is a highly respected attorney specializing in domestic violence and custody and I am a social worker. Yes, I am exactly in the spot I wanted to be in and love my job. Except I want to find a way to eat more Snicker's bars.

I thought for a good decade or so that being an Architect was right for me. Then in my final years of school I did work experience at a couple of places... *snores*
Needless to say I didn't want to be an architect after that. So now it looks like I am well and truly going down the path of web development. I just finished my last uni exams though so I've never had a full time job before. We'll see where it goes!

HAHAH if you read some of my notes about by childhood (well when I was 6) you might have seen that I was a nerd from birth. Naturally I wanted to be an electrical engineer/ do something with robotics/animatronics
Then in my high school years, I just randomly decided to become an animator, and now I yam!

Yes, I am doing what I want to do, exactly as I thought I would be, at this point in my life. I had goals, took the baby steps necessary to achieve them, and am where I want to be in my life.

That depends on the stage of childhood you're talking about: Astronaut, scientist, violinist with the Boston Symphony, orchestra conductor, and porn star are all now out of the question. Luckily, writer, philosopher, philantropist, and business owner were also all on the list, and I'm well on my way towards those.
Who knows, though. Next week life may conspire to make me something else, then make me realize that THAT was what I was looking for all along.

I thought I wanted to be a doctor at one point. I'm really glad I'm not.
At another point, I wanted to be a violinist. I'm really glad I'm not a violinist, either, because sometime between childhood and adulthood I found out I didn't love it as much as I thought I did.
You could say I have thoroughly revised what I "want to be" since then and I'm glad I did! As for things my occupation have enabled me to do and the people I've been able to meet through it and "extra-curriculars"...that's something I didn't expect as a child and feel really blessed to be experiencing that right now.

I didn't know you could work on the web as it wasn't about when I was a kid. But, I did want to combine technology with art in some way. I went through a lot of varying 'wants' for my career from teaching monkey's to sign language (yep I did say varying) and in and out of more traditional fields. Ultimately, I am doing what I wanted as I never wanted to stop learning and as a web designer that will never happen.

I always wanted to be an artist, and then when computer graphics came along I wanted to be a graphic designer, then I screwed myself over in high school. I made some dumb decisions regarding schoolwork habits and that dream is no longer reachable for me. Because of my decisions I don't have the money to go back to school, I am stuck as a floor installer now. Although I am trying to get a little side money designing logos and stuff, but it's not even close enough to what I would call a job.

I always wanted to be an academia but being stuck in poor grades hell when I am young means that the dream seems so faraway. However, as I finally got into university, that small little dream came back to me, and the next thing I know, I have a fully paid academic research scholarship to study my Masters in media economics.
Life does like to play punk.

I am doing the common theme of what I wanted to do. I wanted to be a doctor at first but after volunteering in a hospital I realized I become to attached. If my work day stopped I couldn't turn off caring and I didn't want to become that person that could detach like that.
I do help people everyday and it's one of the things I enjoy the most about what I do so I think I found a good compromise. :)

Nope. When I was a young boy the internets didn't exist. Nor did the profession of web _____er.
I wanted to be a zookeeper for the longest time. Then a marine biologist. Then photographing for National Geographic magazine.
And here I am years later, working in tech support and web design.

Well I don't have a personal fiefdom and I've never been declared King of Earth, so I guess not.
Other than those minor details, I think my life has turned out pretty much the way I wanted it too.

I'm doing what I've wanted to do since I was fairly young, once I realized it was hard to make a living or get into the industries of videogames and comicbooks, I decided on the career I have now. Great topic for a note though, good show.
I love the ones that have a mixture of serious and hilarious answers. :)

Like a couple others have said it depends on what stage of childhood we are talking about. The first job was an astronaut, then the Colombia blew up. Then it was a doctor. Then in high school it was a professional soccer player and I had my chance at that one and passed it up. Then I realized I really didn't want to do anything, but still be respected for doing nothing so I started 9rules. Wait, that didn't come out right...

I still have no idea what I want to be.
I changed my mind three times a week when I was a kid and I'm still going "OOOH THAT would be cool to do!".
I wish I could settle on ONE thing.

Hrm.
Well, I've done a lot of things I've always wanted to do.
I have not, however, spent my 24 hours with the Stanley Cup.
So that's a bit of a letdown.

I wanted to be a pilot, but then I realized I was afraid of heights. Then I witnessed the Flugtag disaster of 1988 in person - that pretty much crippled those dreams. For now, I'll settle for watching programs on the History Channel & Discovery.
When I was in high school, I wanted to be a programmer. I am one right now but I'm not quite there yet. I'm primarily doing tech support with programming as a secondary responsibility.
Sometimes I don't want to be a programmer. Sometimes I fee like investing some time at a zoo or aquarium.

WOW, I bet you're glad not to have been in the mood for ice cream.
I've never heard of that disaster. It must not have been aired on US TV much cause I don't remember anything about that.

For me, there was never one thing that stood out as the thing I wanted to do when I was older. The childhood daydreams of being a lead guitarist or race car driver never came to fruition. If someone had told me ten years ago I would be working as a sysadmin, I would have thought they were crazy.
Do I like it? Mostly.
Do I wish I was doing something more creative and interactive? Yep.
Do I feel like I settled a bit career wise? Yeah.
I understand what RightOn mentioned above. I seem to have what I refer to as CADD, career attention deficit disorder. My interests are always changing. One minute I'm interested in setting up server, another I'm having a blast showing people how to get more out of their cameras, and another I'm wanting to take advantage of this journalism degree I have sitting around (technology journalist maybe).
Eventually I'll find something that fits. Until then I'll have fun looking.

Sometimes I regret that I have to act like a "grown-up", but I have, indeed, finally grown up and found the work that I love.
Is it what I always wanted to do? No way. I've already done that. It didn't work out. Not in the sense that I didn't succeed at fulfilling my dream. I did.
I got everything and more, the realized I didn't really want all of it after all.
I learned the true meaning of the phrase: "Be careful what you wish for."
