What does the weekend mean to you?

To everyone the weekend means something different. Maybe it means your weekly soccer game or simply time to kick back with a beer and watch TV. I don't know the person who invented weekends (yes they were invented), but you have to think the person was tired of doing something over and over again and decided there should be a weekend to get away from it. Could you imagine the guy?
He has to go hunting every single day for food and if he doesn't catch anything by 5pm, he has to stay after work and pick berries. Getting fed up with this routine he decides that he would rather starve for two days than to keep the routine constant. Sometimes the clan asks that he stay over and continue hunting, but he lets them know that 2 days without food is well worth some relaxation time.
And that is a completely true story. So what does the weekend mean for you and is it as important for you now as it was 10 years ago?

To me the weekend is a slightly less pressure version of the normal week -- fewer emails, more free time.

Weird, but weekends aren't really weekends when I don't punch a clock. I could make Tues/Thurs. my weekend if I wanted to - and I have because I like change. They are just days to me now and I like that. I learned to take some "me" time but I'm trying to accumulate it until I move when I know I'm going to want huge chunks of it.

Being a student, the summer is kind of one giant weekend. More so being a freelancer, weekends don't mean no work. This is why you have to love what you do ;)

For me, this weekend is all about making several hotel reservations inland, up and down Texas so that I'm covered not matter where Dean should decide to land.
...and yes, weekends are just as important to me now as they were ten years ago. But now that I have kids who are old enough to enjoy weekends, it's all about them now -- not me. And that's perfectly cool.

Too often this summer at least half of the weekend has meant work.

To me weekends mean a change in routine during the week I work a steady hard working job, with inconsistent hours. But during the weekend I work a completely different job, doing something I enjoy with work hours that my boss and I can much set at own pace. I generally enjoy weekdays, more than weekends, but my major drag during the week is having a job I don't completely enjoy. But we gotta pay the bills somehow.

Right now it means "crap, two more days and I'm back to school."
Break ending soon. D:
Normally I just treat it as a regular break and do whatever I tend to do in my free time; which is, being on the computer working on my various projects.

Weekends for me are a catch up time. Like Mike there are less emails and calls so it's a time when I can take my time. I usually try and sort things out like accounts along with try and have a break on Sunday for a few hours if possible. I'd also prefer a day off in the week (2 would rock). Since working at thoof though I'm getting a taste for the 'no work' days which mean I can catch up on things that have piled up over the weekend. I like the sorting time it gives me for emails that have built up over the weekend and other things I haven't had chance to get around to. The slower pace is also a relief after the week.

Weekends usually equal soccer games. I am not sure what I will do when my youngest son no longer plays. In the fall football is definitely on my schedule for Sundays.

I will be working in my garden today, getting my hands dirty planting, weeding and pruning my plants and shrubs...which is exaclty the way I like it. That is a form of weekend relaxation to me.

Over the last few months my weekends have been changing.
The first half of 2007 was my last semester at uni, so weekends were just like any other day without classes - spent on uni projects, and socializing only when possible. My Saturdays and Sundays were identical to my Thursdays.
Then after June I finished uni and decided to do nothing for a while, so each day involved waking up at around lunchtime. Very lazy, but damn I needed the break.
Now I only just got my first full time job, and today is actually my first weekend after my first week on the job. It's been strangely busy, because all the things I had no time to do during the week have now piled up and happened at once. It's definitely going to take some getting used to.

Working in the food industry is something that has taken a huge toll on my life. Well up until three weeks ago when I changed positions. I had a inconsistent schedule (my weekends could be any assortment of two days every two weeks or so). So it was hard to plan things and very hard to get things done that I wanted to.
About three weeks ago I changed positions to where I have an absolute consistent schedule. It's awesome, I now work from 3-10(:30) monday-friday so I now have Saturday and Sunday to do whatever.
My weekends really consist of taking the past week, reflecting on it, and throwing it out the window and (not) looking forward to the next week. Aside from that I hang out with friends and figure out what I should do with my life.

It means very little to me. I spend most of the day working on something, regardless of the day/whether there's a weekend, and use the evenings for leisure. If there's anything different, it's because my girlfriend gets the weekends off from work. Then again, this might not be a good thing for too long. It's important to get some diversity.

Weekends are really the only thing that keep me sane. I get to spend time with the people I love, I get to sleep, and I can stay away from my computer for more than an hour at a time. Invaluable.

The weekend usually means that I have time to spend on my interests instead of those of my professors (well, Sunday night is totally devoted to professor's interests). :P

The weekend and the weekday, nor the time, nor the month mean anything to me, as I am unemployed.

What do weekends mean to me? My sleeping and eating patterns are the same but I have more time to do things I enjoy or errands I did not or do not do during the week like laundry and gardening. Most definitely weekends over the years have had different meanings for me. Parenting and all the Boy Scout, baseball games, supervising or organizing homework / school projects, providing transportation to child-centered programs, buying school supplies and clothing etc used to be most weekends.

My weekend isn't the same as your weekend. My weekend falls on Friday and Saturday, instead of Saturday and Sunday like the rest of the world :)
So what does the weekend mean to me?
- It's time to do my week-long laundry.
- It's time to do some housechorese.g. sweep, mop, clean, wash, brush
- It's time to worry about lunch and dinner (because most shops are closed on weekends, and I can't cook)
- It's time to look forward to Sunday
Oh my, this sounds so very pathetic, no?

Honestly, the weekend to me is doing my job, but instead from my office, I get to do it via my mobile phone and email. Now that is sad.
But I do get some things to look forward too. Perhaps a picnic with the missus, or a cinema visit. Cooking Sunday roast, watching a Grand Prix. Maybe visiting a show/exhibition or something similar. If the weather is good and the tide and swell is right, I may even get a few rides on the board. I try to do one thing at the weekend that isn't work related and enjoy it to its most.

The weekend for me means laundry, cleaning house and playing referee to my 5 year old and my 2 year old who love to try to kill each other. :)

Friday and Saturday nights I hang out with my friends. Sunday is my quiet me-time. During the days I catch up on errands/chores.
