I'm in the process of fixing up one of my bathrooms that has a tub shower.
I'm wondering if you had the choice, would you put in a shower door or a shower curtain?

Door.

From a person who has a shower curtain, I say go with a shower door.

I'm a curtain man myself. A little high maintenance but I've got to many doors in my life.

Shower door.
Those mouldy curtains are a thing of my (student) past.
Never again, not even if they have a 9rules pattern. ;)

I used to be a shower curtain guy, but I moved into a house with shower doors and would never go back.

if you have a door, you won't have anything to wrap dead bodies in. keep a tarp handy.
Written Nov. 8, 2006 / Edit / Report /
If you have neither shower door nor tarp, you still have mouldy dead bodies. Hence, no shower curtain needed. Unbeatable logic.

I'm all about the door too. I hate the tub showers, in fact. I can't help but mention one of my favorite pickup lines though: save water, shower with a friend.
Written Nov. 8, 2006 / Edit / Report /
I think the word "friend" needs to be defined just a tad more precisely.
I can think of many friends I'd rather not shower with.
To put it into Eddie Murphy's timeless words (from that wonderful tune, "Boogie in your Butt"): "I'd rather golf, to be perfectly honest."

Well, I don't use pickup lines on people I don't want to shower with, deus. ;-)

Well so far there are more votes for shower doors then curtain. We'll see what the final count is come Friday when I actually make my final decision.
I'm leaning towards the door too.
Now another question, clear or frosted glass? I don't want to be cleaning glass daily... having to squeegee glass isn't fun.
Any thoughts on the glass type?

I'd say frosted just because looking into a shower isn't all that appealing. It appears nicer to keep it kinda separate. Privacy too, I suppose?

Go with a door with a pattern on it, doesn't have to be frosted per se, just something on it. I'll post a shot of my door later tonight so you can see what mine looks like.

devin: good point about privacy.
mattplanet: just don't post a picture of you single britney spears in the shower, ok? :)

right'o. :)
Speaking of the shower (not to change the subject of the note), how much stuff do you do in the shower opposed to out of the shower?
For instance, because of the fog-free mirror I have up in my shower, I shave and brush my teeth in the shower, as well as bath and shampoo. This leaves just the application of deodorant and body spray after the shower is done...and occasionally some lotion for the face (cold weather dries me out).

mattplanet: You need a mirror to brush your teeth?
I use an electric razor, so no shower shaving for me.

sean - no, I don't need the mirror to brush my teeth, I meant I use that to shave with, I just worded my sentence a little weird...

I'm gonna go with the curtain, and I've used both curtains and doors all my life but am currently using curtains. I think you can get some nice shower curtains to match whatever decor your bathroom has for the rest (bathmats and shit) and if you go with the clear plastic on the inside and a nice fabric on the outside, it looks pretty nice and you can interchange whenever you want.
Curtains are cheaper, offer more variety of color/style, and ..... I think there are only 2 reasons :)

Mike: OMG! You were starting to sound like Martha Stewart until you said "bathmats and shit". Good save and shit ;)
Martha Stewart is evil but I do understand your point. Thanks for your feedback.

I have to put in my vote for shower curtain. Doors require /too much/ maintenance to keep clean. I always end up ruining the metal around them with whatever cleaning agent I'm using at the time... and man... having to wipe them down /every day/ to prevent that film from building up...
Sure, curtains get film and all that. The really cool thing though? Throw them away, go out and buy another $3 pair. I mean, you're using a "nice" curtain outside and a cheap curtain for inside your shower right?
seanrox

phantomdata: i agree about having to clean/wipe a door down daily but having a curtain stick to you isn't fun either.... so many decisions... but you're right, nice curtain on the outside for looks and a $3.00 liner on the inside makes sense.

is anybody a little weirded out by the fact that we've got over 20 replies to a notes thread about shower curtains?
are we that starved for news around here?!? :)

Curtains all the way. They're the obvious low-maintenance choice. I hate cleaning bathrooms so why add one more thing to clean? Doesn't make sense to me. Besides, ericshepard is right, there are 101 uses for a shower curtain.

mattplanet: see, we're not starved for news really, i just posted a note that everyone can relate too :) and who doesn't shower? um, actually, do we really want to know that? Moving along...

I like curtains because I like to change the look from time to time. I also like that I can throw curtains in the washing machine and I'd have to clean a shower door.
seanrox
Written Nov. 8, 2006 / Report /
Well it's looking like I'll be going the shower curtain route for the main reason of less maintenance. For kicks, I'll take pictures of the new curtain once I have it up. Yay shameless plug for an upcoming post :)

"and who doesn't shower? um, actually, do we really want to know that? Moving along..."
Actually I bathe more than shower. With candles...
I'm having a moment. I'm actually looking forward to what seanrox picks! I live through other people's home projects because I never finish my own!

I can handle either, but when it comes down to it I like a shower door because that means its usually a certain type of shower and those hold more appeal to me for some reason.

Tyme: Baths are good too. What I'd like to get down the road is a jacuzzi for my backyard... talk about a nice bath!
I'm heading out to shop for a curtain now... wish me luck.

Once I have it in hand, I'll post a picture.

shower doors are easier to maintain but curtains are fun and you can get new ones all the time for pretty cheap....Personally I have 3 bathrooms in my condo and one has a shower door and one has a shower curtain...so i'm covered.
seanrox

stefani: sounds like you have 2.5 baths, two with toilets, sink, showers and/or tub showers and one with just a sink and toilet... but still, you have the best of both worlds by having both the door and a curtain.
I had a shower door in my old place, it was a pain to keep clean now that I think about it. After showering, I'd have to squeegee the glass, then spray that shower cleaner stuff. Maybe it was because the water was hard in my area but if I didn't do that after every shower, the glass would get funky.

well I have two bathrooms and a lav, but they all have toilets in them so for me their bathrooms....
seanrox
Written Nov. 13, 2006 / Report /
stefani, indeed they are all 3 bathrooms, just here in the US (not sure where you are from) we consider having a toilet, sink and shower a bathroom and when it only has a sink and toilet, we call it a half bath.
No big deal, I just wanted to clarify my previous comment.

stefani, I do have a dog but I usually close the bathroom door when I'm taking a shower.
In my 10 years of having my dog, she has never jumped into the shower with me.

I must be the only one with both, although, if I had my choice, I'd have just a curtain. I hate cleaning the doors.
My dad put in the doors years and years ago, and as we grew up, my brother and I were on the same schedule to get up and out the door. My mom ended up putting a curtain in front of the doors, so that if he was running late, and I had to get in the shower, he could still come in a brush his teeth and stuff, withoug out seeing me in my birthday suit. Because that would be creepy.
I keep the curtain up now because the tubs a horrid mess (if people saw it, they'd think it belongs in a crack house). I've given attempting to clean because somehow the enamel on the tub came off, and that tub is never going to look clean again.

Door. Curtains tend to have an annoying habit of trying to cling to you as you shower. And are definitely not as easy to keep clean.
well. that's what my cleaner says ...
