I've only moved once: to a city just out of Boulder when I was going to school there. It was close, cheap, and nicer than living in Boulder.

But now I have a job. I travel around 30% (maybe more) and the rest of the time I'm working on the opposite side of town, (literally, look here!). I plan to move at the end of the year.

Have you moved because of your job? Was it far? Was it the right move?

I personally haven't done it but I know many that have and it was a positive move for them. The biggest thing: would you be so far away from your friends/girlfriend/family that it would be a pain in the butt to see them? For my friends, it wasn't so it was a good move for them.

The only time I had a problem when when I worked for a CPA firm, they were on the other side of town and tax seasons were hell. That's seasonal and the "good" thing was that I was driving at whacked hours so I missed rush hour (winter).

I have. Moved from Tampa to Fort Lauderdale to take a job as a writer. Was it a good move? Maybe. It certainly wasn't bad. The only downside is that now I sort of feel I'm stuck here, instead of being able to go where I want (North Carolina, or back to Tampa) because just about everyone I know lives in either SoFla or Tampa. Also, I have a job that pays well and gives me a lot of time off, a hard combo to find.

As for friends, I don't mind starting over, mind you: meeting new people has never been all that hard for me (If I keep telling myself that, it'll come true), though I'm not always great at keeping up. But I'd certainly miss having my family nearby. And yes, 4 hours is nearby.

I've moved across the state for a job. It was definitely worth it for me. I was ready to leave the college atmosphere and move to the next phase in my life. the job didn't work out, but I got another one that was actually closer to what I live. So all in all, it worked out 100% in my favor.

I moved from San Francisco to L.A. in 2000 for a job I left 2 years later. My wife and I welcomed the change and bought a house down here in '05. The change was worth it because we would never have been able to afford a house in the Bay Area. We are happy with the move.

Hmm, alright everything sounds positive. Like JPhill I think I'm ready to get into a new atmosphere, among many things.

This helps make things easier. :)

I have moved in the past for a job, bought a house in a new city, made new friends, etc., and it was a positive experience.

Never have, but I would in a heartbeat. I see it as an adventure.

I once moved because I couldn't find a job I wanted, but never for a specific job.

@Devin: I will warn you, however, that in my case the job I moved for turned out to be a horrible job. Great resume experience, mind you, but frankly I despised where I was at. Everything else has been good. Well, save for cost of living and hurricanes, but those are easy enough to get used to.

I moved from Seattle to South Texas to be a teacher. That was quite an experience.

Then I moved from South Texas to DC because I wanted a new job, but not for a specific job.

Now I am moving (from DC to CA) for love. This Saturday. I am fortunate to be taking my job with me (on a contract basis).

We moved from Toronto to Vancouver for a job (my partner's job) about a year ago. It was definitely an adventure. She ended up hating the job and quit after 3 months to start her own company. All her clients - in Toronto.

Moving across the country was a good way to shake things up and in many ways it's been a positive experience. But I definitely miss having close friends nearby and still feel like we're in a holding pattern around whether or not to commit to this new place. Time will tell!

I did. I was working about 45min - 1 hour away from work and the commute (in a location where there was no train service), was really getting to me so we decided to build a new home closer (15-20min to work).

Best thing I ever did. More family time = Sooo worth it.

Well, yes, we moved for my husband's job, because the military told us to. We moved from Las Vegas to Germany, so it was quite far, and it took a lot of getting used to as well. It's been a positive experience overall. That being said, we're ready to move back to the States now, and that will be another move "for a job" since we won't move without a job in hand. When we move, we'll be looking for a home close to his office, so that we won't have to move again!

Make sure you look at all the variables before you move. Moving on impulse without research is not a good idea.

You've all got good points. I think I'm mostly in Cappuccino's shoes. Nothing too crazy like another state or country (wow dreamweaver...) but I'm looking forward to a little change in scenery.

I'm wondering if anyone here does/has lived in Portland?

moved from D.C. to san fran this year for my current job. i love it out here but if i ever want to own anything, or start a family, its gonna have to be elsewhere because housing is crazy expensive here. but i do love the city and the weather.

I've got friends in Portland — it's definitely on my list of potential relocation destinations. Lots of creative folks. The restaurant scene is happenin' out there right now too, I'm told.

I haven't moved FOR a job but I relocated for family reasons and THEN got a job ;)

I've only had one job post college which I moved out of a city I thought I was going to stay in to a different state but a state I was familiar with.

I've moved many times in my short life though, all over the world so moving is not a big deal to me.

When I am required to go to the offices where I work the commute is an hour, not unusual around here so I wouldn't move to be closer to where I work.

I have, but I don't think it counts because instead of 7 miles away from work it became 2 blocks. It happened to be a great deal for the rent across the street from Beverly Hills (I still live here despite the rent increases) and I found my life migrating towards this side of town, anyway.

A no-brainer.

If I thought the new job were a great opportunity in a city I found desirable to work and live in, I would in a heartbeat. Like London. I would love to be making British Pound Sterlings right now...

A story with a move: back in the day, my boyfriend and I were finishing college. We made an agreement: whoever got a job first and wherever it was is where we would both move. The other person would start unemployed and look for a job near the new city. I got the job first and we both moved and found an apartment. Was it hard? Not with your other and at the time, better half.

Good story, auburn. I'll have to keep that in mind. ;)

Can't beat that commute, estarla.

jensized: I'm really attracted to it right now. I like the Pac NW.

eric: Yeah, I'm not into 'expensive' right now. Haha, I still like living as the starving college student with a salary. ;)

I live in Japan so you can definitely count me in as one who has moved because of the job. Even after coming to Japan, I have made a number of moves within the country, all of which were based around a job and the locations of said jobs.

Moving for a job can definitely be a worthwhile experience, but is a decision that needs to be looked at with care and caution.

I moved from Johnson City, TN to Dallas, Texas. Fortunately, my commute isn't so bad.

Still at the same place as I graduated college (3 years after graduation). That seems like the time to move for a job, and after that it's a waiting game until you're either unhappy/in a good spot to move. I'm in Orlando, and although I love the people and my job, and I really dislike the town and probably would move somewhere down the line -- but it'd have to be a kick-ass position in a city/area that I already know I'd love.

I just experienced moving for my job after moving at least 5 times before this. (the military likes to keep you on your toes)

Anyway, I just moved from Las Vegas to Colo Springs and it hasn't been that bad an experience. My house here in CO is still a mess, I've got boxes to get rid of, stuff to find a place for and pictures to hang. But I'll be done with all that by tomorrow. I've got my desk setup, my media center running and my sofa in place so I'm a happy boy.

I really don't mind moving that much, but I hate, hate, hate packing and unpacking.
